Electrode pads for defibrillators and AEDs
If a person experiences cardiac arrest or an irregular heart rhythm, they must be resuscitated immediately with a defibrillator. Powered by a battery, the defibrillator delivers electrical shocks via electrode pads (also called defibrillation electrodes, defibrillation pads, defibrillation patches, or AED pads) to restore the heart's rhythm. The positioning of the electrode pads is crucial during resuscitation and is usually illustrated on the pads. For adolescents and adults, electrode pads are attached below the right collarbone and under the left armpit. For children, they are attached to the center of the chest and to the back.
Not only does the positioning of the defibrillator pads differ for children and adults, but so does the type of electrodes. Since children under 8 years of age or weighing less than 25 kg require a lower current output, some defibrillators can be set to a children's mode, which reduces the shock effect. For other defibrillators, electrode pads specifically designed for children must be used.
