In industry, flammable substances or dusts can pose a high risk to people involved. To ensure explosion protection in such situations, explosion-proof, or ex-proof, equipment must be used. The ATEX Directives 2014/34/EU and 99/92/EC, as well as Articles 114 and 137, define explosion protection in Europe and the associated equipment requirements. A distinction is made between different Ex zones and equipment groups. The zones refer to the probability or duration that a flammable substance in the form of gas, vapor, or mist, or combustible dust, is present at the site of use.

Zone 0: In this area, an explosive atmosphere is present frequently, over an extended period, or continuously during normal operation. For example, due to the presence of explosive gases, vapors, or mist. Special precautions must be taken.

Zone 1: During normal operation, an explosive atmosphere occasionally occurs in this zone, but the probability is lower than in Zone 0.

Zone 2: In Zone 2, an explosive atmosphere rarely occurs and usually only for a short period of time, for example due to accidents or short-term disruptions.

The equipment groups differ in terms of their location of application.

Group I: Equipment for use in mining/surface/underground operations

Group II: Equipment for use in potentially explosive gas atmospheres

Group III: Equipment for use in potentially explosive dust atmospheres: I, IIA, IIB, IIC, IIIA, IIIB
