What is a lead-acid battery?

A lead-acid battery is a rechargeable battery in which the electrodes, when charged, consist of lead oxide and the electrolyte consists of sulphuric acid. Lead-acid technology has been established for many decades and is characterised in particular by high reliability, high current-carrying capacity and an attractive price-performance ratio. For sealed and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, a distinction is mainly made between two technologies: AGM and gel batteries. Safety valves allow for controlled pressure relief should the internal pressure in the battery rise, thereby ensuring safe use.

Gel batteries

A gel battery is a lead-acid battery in which the electrolyte (sulphuric acid) is bound by the addition of silicic acid, resulting in a gel-like electrolyte structure. Compared to many AGM designs, gel batteries are particularly suitable for applications where high cycle stability and repeated charging and discharging cycles are required. These include, amongst others, industrial applications, mobile power supply systems, emergency power solutions and equipment used cyclically. Specific suitability should be checked against the manufacturer’s specifications. Gel batteries are also referred to as SLA batteries (SLA = sealed lead acid).
